University and College Outreach

Maureen McBride is our Northern Nevada Writing Project's Univeristy & College Outreach Coordinator.  She took the NNWP Summer Institute in 2004.  Maureen teaches at the University of Nevada-Reno.

Why do we reach out to our University and colleges?

University outreach is a response to many different calls for more continuity between educational levels. The articulation across levels is a simple concept that never seems to receive priority. Primary, secondary, and college-level instructors do not have a clear understanding of the purpose and goals of writing instruction at each level, nor the theoretical underpinnings. The purpose of university outreach within the Northern Nevada Writing Project is to open up dialogue between educators at all levels.

To get the conversations started, dialogues will be opened between community colleges and the university, college systems (university, community colleges) and secondary schools, and primary through college. To begin, college writing expectations will be shared with secondary students, educators, and parents. Collaborations between secondary and college-level instructors will also be developed through shared experiences, observations, and the development of a resource guide.

I look forward to participating in the conversations and hope that others will share their ideas for furthering this collaboration.
