Technology: Our New On-line Projects

A portion of the federal funding the Northern Nevada Writing Project receives each year is designated for technology initiatives. The NNWP invests this money not in software or equipment, which we found to go out-of-date too fast; instead, we invest our technology funding in the creation of a resource website and on-line community that requires no special software or equipment to access. Teachers with Internet access have everything they need to make use of the website that we have built here in Northern Nevada.

In 2001, the Northern Nevada Writing Project launched WritingFix, a free-to-use site that features lessons, resources, and ideas from Nevada teachers on the teaching of writing in kindergarten to college classrooms.

WritingFix continues to grow every year, it finds new areas to focus on, and it reaches more and more teachers and students. For 2008, we expect to reach almost 3 million page hits from teachers, students, and writers.

From this page you can access our areas of newest growth at the WritingFix website.

New Growth We're Sponsoring at WritingFix:

HistoryFix is Growing!

NNWP TC Denise Boswell has taken over the coordination of WritingFix's first "sister site": HistoryFix.

HistoryFix will feature writing across the curriculum lessons for social studies curriculum.

Denise currently has posted over a dozen new lessons at the site, and she is using her portion of the technology budget to hire more teachers to submit their lessons. Denise will be presenting this new website at an NNWP inservice as well as at a national social studies conference.

Here Come the iPod Prompts!

NNWP TC Rob Stone has taken over the coordination of WritingFix's newest collection of writing lessons: iPod-inspired Writing Prompts.

This new collection of prompts focus on both poetry and writing across the curriculum lessons. As part of the teaching process, the teacher shows or plays something that has been stored on the classroom's iPod.

Currently, we have two dozen lessons, and by summer of 2009, Rob expects to feature twice that amount.

Art Meets Writing!

NNWP TC and artist Sandra Young continues to build her collection of on-line lessons for elementary teachers. These lessons skillfully link writing instruction with art instruction.

At present, Sandra has four amazing lessons posted, and she is working on several others.

This spring, Sandra will be hosting a new inservice class that features the lessons from her page at WritingFix. Participants will propose their own ideas for lessons, and Sandra will be posting several of her favorite.

Watch out for ScienceFix!

NNWP Technology Liaison Corbett Harrison is currently looking for a TC to begin developing WritingFix's second "sister site": ScienceFix.

ScienceFix will feature writing across the curriculum lessons for 4th-12th grade science curriculum.

At present, we have two lessons and our Science RAFT-Prompt designer. By year's end, we hope to have a dozen featured lessons.
