What happens during the Summer Open?
|
| Our Summer Open teaches the philosophy of the National Writing Project, which emphasizes teachers teaching teachers. Through this three-credit summer class, teachers and future teachers become familiar with the latest classroom writing research, gain exposure to Nevada state writing standards and inspiring classroom strategies to teach them, and learn successful strategies to prepare students for state writing assessments. Participants of the Open are also encouraged in their own personal writing so that they understand more fully what their students experience when given writing assignments. |

Writing Traits! |
Currently, the Open is offered every summer in June. It is a three-week, four day, eight to twelve class in which dedicated teachers who have taken the Summer Invitational class and have been trained as teacher consultants present their research-based classroom strategies to participants. Participants leave with a multitude of classroom activities and techniques that can be applied immediately. Presentations mostly focus on the six writing traits, the writing process, writing across the curriculum, and reading and writing connections.
