Our 5-Credit Invitational Summer Institute (ISI)
Every year since since 1982, the NNWP has offered its 5-credit Invitational Institute. Teachers apply to attend, and when accepted, they begin a journey that changes them as writing teachers.
Carol Gebhardt and Kim Cuevas are our Northern Nevada Writing Project's Summer Institute Facilitators.
Carol--who took the ISI in 2005-- coordinated the creation of NNWP's Going Deep with Compare & Contrast Workbook as part of her work with the NNWP's Teacher Inquiry Projects.
Kim--who took the ISI in 1999--also coordinates the NNWP's Literacy Initiatives. These outstanding TCs became Co-Directors of the Northern Nevada Writing Project in September of 2007. |

What's the best professional development opportunity
in Northern Nevada? |
| Each Institute participant attends a Saturday orientation in the Spring. All agree to return in June, promising to locate research and do further explorations on why one of their best practices in writing instruction works. All agree to return in June with personal and professional topics they wish to unpack by taking them through the writing process. |

Spring Orientation: Meeting a group of friends you never knew you had before.
|
The summer session begins with a three-day retreat. The Institute's facilitators, mentors, and participants begin forming a community of learners that will last all summer long. Writing is accomplished. Best practices are discussed. Response and revision become Institute norms.
|

The Summer Retreat: Amazing food and new connections.
|
| Three weeks are then spent on the University campus. Each participant crafts and presents a 90-minute demonstration to the group. The other Institute members participate in each demonstration and help the presenter shape the ideas further. As a result of the experience, everyone leaves with a toolbox full of new, research-based ideas. |

Class at UNR: Active participation and professional inspiration. |
As both writers and teachers, we remain in contact for the rest of the summer on the NNWP's blog.
The group meets face-to-face one last time in the Fall. Plans are made to find future audiences for our demonstration lessons. We return to our classrooms with new energies, new colleagues, and new friends.
This is a professional development experience that will change your perception of teaching. |
