Northern Nevada Writing Project: Our Pen-Pal Initiatives

The Northern Nevada Writing Project sponsors a pen-pal program for our year-round Northern Nevada schools on a multi-track school schedule. Students on similar tracks from different schools exchange writing with a pen-pal, through school mail. Writers seek response from and friendship with students they have never met. Many of the classes meet at the end of the school year as a celebration.

Torrey Palmer is the Northern Nevada Writing Project's Pen-Pal Program Coordinator, and she oversees the NNWP's Multi-track outreach program.  Torrey took the NNWP Summer Institute in 2004.  She currently teaches at Double Diamond Elementary, which is a multi-track/year-round school.

Torrey is also a member of the Northern Nevada Writing Project Technology Team. She has several lessons featured at our site-sponsored website: WritingFix

Our Pen-Pal Program:

Northern Nevada Writing Project’s Multi-Track/Year-Round Initiative is an opportunity for teachers on the non-traditional track to connect and their students to write in an authentic venue.  Too often teachers from schools on non-traditional schedules feel isolated from opportunities and programs put on by NNWP over the summer months.  However, NNWP has created opportunities just for them!

Our MT/YR Pen Pal Program pairs classes of the same track color to exchange writing.  Teachers attend a brief orientation at the beginning of the year, where they meet their partners and gather new inspiration for their writing curriculum.  They also use the time to plan out their year and match their students as pen pals.  Over the course of the year, students exchange new writing pieces and respond to the work they receive from their pen pals.  At the end of the year, NNWP sponsors a field trip so pen pals are able to meet!

Now in its third year, the Multi-Track/Year-Round Pen Pal Program has inspired teachers and motivated students to produce some great writing!

In the 2005-2006 school year, participating teachers exchanged writing assignments based on Barry Lane's 51 Wacky We-Search Reports.  All participants received a free copy of this marvelous book.

For the 2006-2007 school year, and again in the 2007-2008 school year, participating teachers are using the Picture Book Writing Prompts found on the NNWP's site-sponsored website, WritingFix.  For participating, each teacher received three free picture books found on that page to use in their classrooms.
