How Mentorship Impacts our Program

Our Invitation Summer Institute Mentor Initiative began several summers back under the guidance of Jodie Black, Co-Director of NNWP.  Each year the Northern Nevada Writing Project recruits 15-20 outstanding teachers to participate in its Invitational Summer Institute, a five-credit graduate course devoted the current research on writing instruction.

During this intensive study of writing, participates create a 90-minute demonstration/ presentation that highlights one area of their writing instruction that inspires and extends their students’ thinking, creativity, and skill in not only writing to learn, but also learning to write.   To guide Summer Institute Fellows through this sometimes-stressful experience, Summer Institute graduates (NNWP's Teacher Consultants) mentor participants through the process of crafting a presentation that inspires colleagues to stretch their thinking about writing instruction.

Mentors and fellows meet throughout the months of June and July.  Having mentors for the Invitational Summer Institute’s participants has become an integral piece of the summer study experience.  Mentors not only provide moral support for the fellows, but also share in the development, pacing, and balance of the new presentations as they take shape.
Mentors and their "mentees" first meet at the May Orientation.  Their relationship lasts all summer long.

Our mentorship program is classified as one of our Continuity Opportunities, and it's certainly one of the best ones we offer.   Mentors grow and extend their own thinking about writing instruction, while new fellows benefit from exchanging ideas with a colleague who has expertise in the overall fine tuning of putting together a valuable and memorable presentation.

Both mentors and fellows leave feeling rejuvenated for the coming school year.

If you're a Northern Nevada Writing Project TC who is interested in mentoring during a summer Institute, please contact Sandy by using our Contact NNWP Leaders page.
