Family Outreach
Initiative
Why are we developing this guide? Communication between family members is key to the success of our students today. Life is so busy, and many things are left unsaid due to the lack of focus on communication. “Families Write” is a novel idea to our Northern Nevada Writing Project, whose focus has mostly been on teachers and their classrooms. Our “Families Write” guide will offer a variety of ideas for families to use when communicating through writing. This guide is in its beginning stages, and will seek out teachers who have completed the Northern Nevada Writing Project. They will be asked to share ideas they have used to help students communicate with their parents, siblings, grandparents and extended families. Our vision is that, by creating this resource, adults will take the initiative to open a new line of communication with the children with whom they are related. This may take the form a journals, letters, blogs, emails, poetry, etc. We also envision the positive effect it will have on students as they see the adults in their lives as writers, which often they don’t. This guide will be offered to every school site in the Northern Nevada Writing Project's territory as well as anyone who uses www.writingfix.org.
