Lead-RR Nevada
Building Leaders Through
Research and Reflection
Lead-RR Nevada is a federally funded, full-time doctoral program in Educational Leadership and Special Education. It is a collaborative program between the Department of Educational Specialties’ Special Education Program, the Research and Educational Planning Center  and the Nevada University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD).

The Lead-RR program addresses the significant national shortage of leaders in special education by preparing doctoral level professionals for leadership positions in higher education and state/ local administrative positions within Nevada. Our graduates are developing essential leadership competencies and qualities specifically designed for leadership positions in special education. These future leaders will be uniquely qualified to prepare quality special education teachers to meet the demands of teaching in the 21st century.

The program is a unique combination of academic and professional experience. Lead-RR (pronounced “leader”) includes a Research and Reflection component, as well as scholarship and teaching experiences. Internships will provide students with a variety of on and off-campus experiences.

  Research:
A core set of research courses will prepare students for future scholarship. Students will have an opportunity to engage in research and professional writing experiences.
  Reflective Self-Evaluation:
The use of reflective self-evaluation (RSE) will provide students with a mechanism to begin to understand the complex relationship between teaching and learning. It provides an opportunity for students to merge divergent theoretical dispositions. Students will self-evaluate at the end of each year.
Teaching:
Students will teach college level courses as well as supervise field experiences and student teaching. Students will be mentored in developing a course, syllabus, delivering instruction , using performance based assessment and advisement.
  Scholarship:
Professional writing experiences are a fundamental part of the program. These skills are integrated into the process leading to the dissertation proposal, conducting the research, writing the manuscript, presenting and defending it.
  Internships:
Internships are available and provide financial compensation for students. The type and time commitment (10 – 20 hours) are negotiated between student and advisor. The program has commitments from a number of educational organizations for gaining professional experience. Click here for list of internships.
This is a four year, federally funded, grant based project. Our intention is to renew the grant and recruit more students in the future.
