History of Design Lab
The Design Lab was established in 1998 with funds from the Nell J. Redfield Foundation and was the only place on campus where students and faculty from the College of Education and from across the university campus and educators from northern Nevada could learn and utilize cutting-edge technology in digital video editing. What started with a handful of users quickly became a valuable resource for hundreds of educators and even more users from nearly every discipline across campus. It was recognized as such a valuable resource that, in 2002, the university’s Technology Fund replaced the original six Apple computers with the latest Mac G-4s to keep up with the constant need to upgrade and stay current with new technology.
Since then, in part due to the unprecedented success of the Design Lab, digital video editing labs have been established across campus in the Journalism School, the Art Department, and in Getchell Library. The College of Education saw such a need that the Computer Lab on the first floor was upgraded to accommodate video editing and a new high-end PC Lab was established as part of the Raggio Research Center to handle much of the College’s increasing need for digital video editing as part of the education curriculum and the increasing emphasis on technology.
The Design Lab continues to blaze new trails with the latest in Mac and PC technology for digital presentations, print and web design software.
