About the Design Lab

The Design Lab was established to enable College of Education’s preservice teachers and practicing teachers to go into the classrooms with all the technological tools they need to best teach today’s children and to have the knowledge to be able to advocate for the latest technology in their schools.

The Design Lab has six Macintosh G-5 stations and two PC stations so all work can be tested for presentation on both the Mac and PC.

Software

Each station in the Design Lab has iMovie for digital video editing, along with the latest print design software with the Adobe Creative Suite CS which includes InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and GoLive. The G-5s are loaded with Macromedia Suites for web design, including Dreamweaver, Director, Fireworks, Flash, and Freehand.  Each station has a full complement of digital presentation software including iLife, with iPhoto, iWeb, iTunes, and Garageband; iWork with Keynote and Pages; and Microsoft Office which includes PowerPoint.  The PCs have Visual Communicator and Camtasia Studio.

Scanning Stations

There are four scanning stations, one for every two computers and one large format scanner that scans up to 12x18 inches. The scanning stations have optical character recognition software to enable documents to be scanned in as editable text, in addition to scanning high quality and large format photos and images for high-impact visual presentations.

Transfer Stations

A variety of transfer stations are set up just outside the Graphics Room and Design Lab area that can transfer VHS,  DVD and other video formats, including Hi8, Super8 (must bring camera and cables for transfer), into miniDV format for importing and editing on the Design Lab computers.  A DVD recorder enables patrons to burn DVDs from all of these formats, also.

Printers

Two color laser printers are available for print in the Lab. The Tektronix Phaser 750 and the Hewlett Packard Color Laser Printer 5500 that prints up to 11x17 tabloid size. There is also a HP DesignJet 800 ps that prints poster size prints up to 24 inches wide. There is no charge for use of the computers in the Design Lab, the only charge is for printing.

There are price sheets in the door going into the Lab and posted throughout the Lab and Graphics Room area and posted on the website. See Graphics Room Price List.
