Teacher Licensure Programs

Those who wish to teach in grades K-12 in Nevada must have a teaching license.  A license is issued by the State Department of Education in Carson City following completion of a recognized teacher preparation program.  The University of Nevada Reno offers the following teacher preparation programs:

For those who have already completed a bachelor’s degree:

Master’s Degree in Education with First-Time Licensure courses included for licensure in:

Elementary Education (grades K-8)

Secondary Education (grades 7-12) in a specific subject; coursework meeting state licensure requirements for content teaching areas (e.g. English, History, Social Studies, Global Languages, Art, Music, Sciences, Mathematics)  can be done concurrently with the certification courses in education. Content area courses are available in other UNR Departments including teacher shortage areas such as science and mathematics.

Special Education (generalist resource for grades K-12)

Professional Degree in Special Education or Secondary Education (teacher licensure courses only, not part of a master’s degree)


For those working toward a bachelor’s degree:

Early Childhood Education (pre-K and grades K-2)

Elementary Education (grades K-8)

Secondary Education (grades 7-12 in a specific subject; coursework meeting UNR teaching major requirements in this subject is done concurrently with teacher licensure courses)

Special Education (generalist resource for grades K-12)

Integrated Special Education/Elementary Education program culminating in licensure for both elementary education grades K-8 and Special Education generalist grades K-12)

Sixteen weeks (one full-time semester) of student teaching internship is required following completion of the teacher licensure course work.  Twenty weeks of internship is required in the Integrated Program.
