  1. Start dates for your internship will vary according to the public school schedule.
      • Fall Interns, including those at year-round schools will start 2 working days before students start.
      • Spring interns, except duals, will start the next working day after the Martin Luther King holiday. Only spring duals will start Monday after New Years.

  2. Notify the Student Advisement Center on the second floor immediately if your name, phone number, email or mailing address changes. You may print out this form and fax it to Our Office at 327-2323 or the Center at 327-5318 (Make sure you contact Admissions & Records as well). Then email us with the change Office of Field Experiences.

  3. When your placement is posted, call the school and set up a meeting with your lead teacher(s) NOW.  If you can not reach your lead teacher by phone to schedule an appointment, then go to the school in person.  You are still expected to make this initial contact in person even if you already know the teacher.  When you meet, exchange personal contact information and ask what time you should report in the morning on your first day. You MUST meet your lead teacher in person. This initial contact before internship is an expectation of UNR and school district personnel. Failure to do so may result in the school declining your placement. Fall interns: meet teachers before June. Spring interns: meet teachers before winter break.

  4. Register for internship now. Refer to "Upcoming Semester Intern" page for the course & call number as soon as registration begins
      • Register for all remaining coursework, including internship, DARS should read: "All requirements have been met with the exception of current enrollment.
      • Professional Degree and Masters must also register for all remaining coursework, including internship, and submit a completed GPAworksheet to the Office of Field Experiences (see forms page of Website: First Step).

  5. Become familiar with our web page: http://www.unr.edu/educ/fx

  6. Manuals may be revised during the summer or winter break. You can read them earlier. The week prior to your start date, download and read the General Policies and Procedures Manual & your program manual(s).

  7. Provide a copy of the manuals to your lead teacher(s). If you are interning out-of-area, you must also provide a copy of the manuals to your supervisor.

  8. Visit the Current Student Intern bulletin board on our website frequently. The Director will post important messages and meeting dates on the web bulletin board (dates will be posted about 2 weeks in advance). Your first Orientation Seminar will be posted here and your attendance is mandatory.

  9. Verify your lead teacher(s) name and immediately notify our office of any changes by the end of your first week: (775) 784-6248 or Office of Field Experiences . Lead teachers are paid a stipend and this depends on correct information.

  10. Iif you have an emergency or can not start internship on time, contact our office immediately: (775) 784-6248.

  11. The NV Dept. of Ed. needs verification of your passing scores for the appropriate Praxis II exams. Don't put this off!! Register for tests early as they are filling up fast! School districts are increasingly hesitant to hire teachers with testing provisions on their licenses. For more information, visit their website at http://www.ets.org/praxis/.

    Special Ed. - 2 tests - Gen. Resource 20351 & PLT 30522 OR 30524
Dual Ed. - 2 tests - Elem. 1011 & 20012 (you only need Praxis II in one area: and the NV Dept. of Ed. recommends that you take both Elementary tests).
Secondary Ed. - Content & Pedagogy OR PLT if pedagogy is not available & content.
Elementary Ed. - both Elementary tests are needed
Early Childhood - No Praxis II required but be on the alert (take both Elementary tests if you want to teach in a Title I school)

  12. Interns must attend a mandatory all day Orientation Seminar with the Director and this day counts toward internship.  And YES, you will be there all day long unlike the First Step Meeting.  So adjust your schedules!  The seminar will be done twice so you have two opportunities to attend ( you may NOT begin internship unless you attend the Orientation Seminar).  See the web bulletin board for more information.

  13. Year-round Schools going off track during internship: what will you do then?
  • You ‘may' take the entire break off for a vacation or work as a substitute. These weeks will not count toward your internship. Your internship would resume when you return after break.
  • You may request to be placed at another school for the off-track weeks. If you want to do this then speak with your lead teacher ‘and' the supervisor I assign you. Either they will suggest another teacher or I will. These weeks will count toward your internship weeks.
  • Just as many interns do the first option and this will be your choice if you are doing satisfactory. This decision has ‘no' bearing on you graduating in December or May.
  • Please be aware that off-track breaks may include school district wide closures for holidays and winter or spring breaks.

This placement is subject to change pending verification of program requirements, substitute licensure, liability coverage, school district approval and approval of the Director of Field Experiences.

Failure to meet all internship requirements may void or delay your internship.  Internship requirements include: completion of program requirements and coursework, substitute licensure, professional liability coverage, school district approval and approval of the Director of Field Experiences. Contact the director with questions.
