Admission Requirements

Graduate School Requirements

The following materials are to be submitted to the Graduate School

  1. A completed Application for Graduate School Admission.

  2. Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work (if coursework was done at UNR, Admissions and Records would already have the transcripts available for the Graduate School, and you need not send them)

  3. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores. EL requires test scores on the Verbal and Quantitative sections for all Ed.D. and Ph.D. applicants. Information concerning test dates can be obtained from Sylvan Learning Center 775-829-2700 or the ETS Bay Area Testing Center 510-654-1200.

EL Department Requirements

The following materials are to be submitted to the EL Department

  1. A typed, completed EL Application.

  2. Three letters of recommendation which speak to the applicant's potential for success both as a graduate student and as an educational administrator. It is recommended that one letter be from an immediate supervisor, one from a school district office administrator and one from a college professor. Appropriate variations are acceptable.

  3. A typed essay of approximately 1000 words which speaks to the applicant's future goals. Ed.D and Ph.D. applicants are required to write the essay on site as a qualifying examination. See the section below.

  4. Although not required, the applicant may submit additional information in the form of a vita which would strengthen the application relative to professional promise.

  5. Applicants for the Ed.D. and Ph.D. programs should submit three documents reflective of their ability to conduct and report research. Examples may include a Master's thesis, minor research papers, journal articles, scholarly term papers, handbooks or field study reports.

Essay

The essay should be typed, with a length of approximately 1000 words. It should communicate your professional goals and career aspirations. You are encouraged to include references to past accomplishments and how completion of an advanced degree will contribute to the attainment of your future goals.

Ed.D and Ph.D. applicants are required to write the essay on site as a qualifying examination. When the complete EL application has been received, applicants shall schedule with the office manager an appointment for the qualifying exam.

All application materials must be in no later than April if you wish to be considered for a graduate assistantship for the following academic year.
