Equity and Diversity in Educational Settings
The M. Ed. in Equity & Diversity in Educational Settings (EDES) offers an opportunity to focus advanced study on using inclusive teaching methods to serve the diverse learners who comprise today’s classrooms. This program allows teachers to enhance their pedagogical knowledge, skills, and dispositions through teaching subject matter in a manner that accounts for varied student backgrounds. Multiple types of learner differences will be addressed throughout the program’s coursework, with special attention to learner characteristics as they might relate to gender, language, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and exceptionality.
This program explores these issues through online courses, offered at a rate of one or two each semester. The program is a total of 39 credits. On-campus master's and doctoral programs in Equity and Diversity in Educational Settings are also offered.
Detailed information and application instructions can be found in the Online Equity and Diversity Program Manual (PDF).
If you have questions about the courses or the academic content, contact Dr. Lynda Wiest (wiest@unr.edu; 775-682-7868). Questions about enrolling in courses or the online environment can be directed to Independent Learning (775-784-4652; istudy@unr.edu).
Literacy Studies
Literacy in contemporary society is undergoing change as a result of social, cultural, economic, and technological practices and advances. As a result of these changes, literacy encompasses more than ways of reading and writing; literate practices are not limited to print decoding or cognitive strategies used for comprehension or composition. Educators in modern society must attend to the myriad and complex ways that social groups construct and disseminate meanings through literate practices. This master’s program places special emphasis on the many literacies used in modern society and assumes a critical perspective about relationships between literacies and empowerment in a multicultural and pluralistic world.
This program explores these issues through online courses, offered at a rate of one or two each semester. The program is a total of 40 credits. On-campus master's and doctoral programs in literacy studies are also offered.
Detailed information and application instructions can be found in the Online Literacy Studies Program Manual (PDF).
