Teacher Licensure in Elementary, Special Education, English as a Second Language, and Literacy

There are many routes to teacher licensure in Nevadan and several are available in the EDS Department. Additional information about teacher licensure programs can be found through the College of Education Student Advisement Center.

All educator preparation programs in the College of Education are NCATE accredited and conform to Nevada's teacher licensure requirements, with reciprocity to many other states. Information regarding state license requirements can be found on the web site of the Nevada Department of Education.

For those without an undergraduate college (bachelors) degree:

Three undergraduate degrees leading to licensure in special education, elementary and special education, and early childhood education are available through EDS.

 

For those who already have an undergraduate college degree:

• Professional Degree Program in Special Education (post-baccalaureate) provides graduate-level courses toward licensure in special education (K-12). This program fulfills all licensure requirements but no degree is associated with it.
• Courses for special education teachers hired on the "Options" program. Teachers licensed in general education who are hired as special education teachers needs tocomplete requirements for the Nevada Generalist Endorsement in Special Education . This link lists required courses.
• Master's Degree Programs in Special Education provides licensure in a variety of areas in special education in conjunction with Master's Degrees.
• Endorsement to teach English as a second language (ESL) is a teaching area that can be added to a Nevada teaching license in elementary, secondary, or special education. No application is necessary for teachers to take courses leading to the ESL endorsement.
• Master's Degree in TESOL provides the ESL endorsement as part of a program for licensed teachers who want more in-depth study of this field.
• Endorsement as a Literacy Specialist requires a master's degree and completion of 16 specific credits in literacy education. This endorsement is described in the advisement materials for graduate programs in Literacy Studies.
  
  

Advanced Degrees

The Department of Educational Specialties also provides a variety of graduate programs at the master's and doctoral levels for teachers or other education professionals who wish to pursue advanced degrees and continuing professional development experiences.
