Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). . .

About Applying to EDS Graduate Degree Programs

Q: Do I have to contact an EDS Faculty member before I apply?

A: It is not required that you contact an EDS Faculty member prior to

application, but it is highly recommended that you do so. This is particularly

true for doctoral study. Faculty Contact Information

Q: Can I apply for part-time study?

A: Yes, you may study in any graduate program on a part-time basis. You

must be enrolled for at least 3 credits for each fall and spring semester in

order to maintain your status in the program. Doctoral candidates have a

full-time residency requirement for two consecutive semesters during their

study.

Q: Are graduate assistantships or tuition support available?

A: There are some grant-funded programs in the department that may offer tuition support if you meet specific criteria. The EDS department also has a limited number of graduate assistantships. First priority for these positions goes to doctoral students. An application to the department is required.

Q: Can I defer admission to a future semester?

A: Yes, you can request to defer admission by contacting the EDS

Department via e-mail (cheney@unr.edu). We will need to know the date

that you wish to begin. If approved, we will contact the Graduate School to

delay the start of your program.

Q: If I applied previously and did not attend, what to I have to submit?

A: If you requested deferred admission and begin your program when

indicated on your request, you will only need to register for classes for the

approved semester (providing all requirements and immunizations are up

to date and on file). If you did not request deferred admission but did not

begin your program, you may need to re-apply for admission. Please

contact the Graduate School to determine whether you need to re-apply.

Q: If I did not take courses last semester, what do I need to do to re-enroll?

A: If you did not take courses for a fall or spring semester, you will need to

complete and have approved the reinstatement to graduate program form

available on the Graduate School web site under "Publications & Forms."

If you anticipate not being enrolled for a semester or longer, please fill out

a leave of absence form, also available on the Graduate School site.

Q: Can I apply to the master's and doctoral programs at the same time?

A: A master's degree is required for admission to any doctoral program in

EDS. Unless you are seeking a second master's degree, you may not apply

for both degrees at the same time.

Q: If I am not admitted into a doctoral program, can I be considered for a master's

program?

A: Yes, you may be considered for a master's degree. The Graduate School

requires that you complete another application form and pay an additional

application fee.

Q: How and when will I be notified of the Admission's Committee decision?

A: EDS graduate programs vary as to when the Admissions Committees act.

Some do revolving admissions and others have a set date. Please see the

program advisement manual for information. You should expect to hear of

the decision approximately 4 weeks after the deadline date or after you

have submitted all materials, although doctoral admissions often take

longer. You will first be informed by letter from the Graduate School. This

will be followed by a letter from our department informing you of your

advisor.

Q: How recent must scores be for any required tests (e.g., GRE, TOEFL, PPST,

CBEST, depending on program)?

A: EDS observes no time limit on scores for any of these tests; however,

some testing companies may not send scores that are over a certain age.

You may need to contact the testing company in order to determine if

official scores can be sent.

Q: WIll you accept sealed transcripts if I mail or hand-carry them to you?

A: No. All transcripts must be sent directly from the institutions to UNR's

Office of Admissions and Records

Q: Do I need to have transcripts sent for every college- level class I have taken?

A: Yes, the Graduate School requires transcripts of ALL college courses

taken

Q: How many copies of each transcript should I arrange to be mailed?

A: One copy sent to the Office of Admissions and Records is sufficient.

Q: Is there anything else I need to know about transcripts?

A: All official documents should be in English or accompanied by an

English translation.

Q: Can letters of recommendation be faxed or e-mailed to EDS?

A: Yes, letters can be faxed or e-mailed directly from the person writing the

letter (email to: cheney@unr.edu). EDS Fax: 775-784-4384

Q: Are immunizations needed before registration for courses?

A: Yes. Immunizations are required for all students. If you were born in

1957 or later, you must present documentation of immunization for the

following before you can be admitted to the university: two doses for

measles, mumps and rubella (MMR); and an immunization within the last 10

years for diphtheria/tetanus.

If you were born before 1957, you are exempt from the MMR requirement.

However, you are required to have a diphtheria/tetanus immunization

within the last 10 years. International students have additional

requirements and must contact the Student Health Center (775) 784-6598

before registration.

Q: What if I have questions that are not listed here?

A: Please contact the Department of Educational Specialties at

775-784-4383. You may also e-mail the Director of Graduate Study for your

program, listed at

http://www.unr.edu/content/programs/gradprograms.asp.
