  • Bob Ives, associate professor of special education, was awarded a prestigious Fulbright grant for research and teaching work in Romania during spring semester of 2008. He is involved in three separate research projects while in Romania.

  • Julie Pennington, associate professor of literacy studies, has been awarded the Distinguished Summer Teaching Award for her literacy methods course taught in the first summer session of 2007. Dr. Pennington's award was featured in the 2008 summer schedule.

  • Megan Meschery, a 2005 graduate of the TESOL program, has been awarded a 2007-2008 Fulbright Scholarship to do research in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Spain.

  • Several graduate student in EDS have won awards for their work for the 2006-2007 academic year! Regina Smith, doctoral student in literacy studies (advisor Donald Bear), won an Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. Mike Dornoo, doctoral student in EDS with emphasis on math education (advisor, Lynda Wiest), received an award for Outstanding International Graduate Student. Janet Frost, doctoral student in EDS with emphasis in math education (advisor Lynda Wiest), was the sole winner of the campus-wide Regents Scholar Award.

  • Mary Holcomb, Cheryl Doetch, and Kimberly Howland (all Washoe County School District educators working on their Master's Degrees in Literacy Studies as members of the Lemelson 5 Cohort ) have been awarded a 2007 Teacher As Research Grant from the International Reading Association for their project entitled, "Motivating Boys to Read:  What Works for Struggling First and Third Grade Boys?"  The IRA Teacher As Researcher Grant is a highly competitive international grant.  Only a handful of these grants are awarded each year.

  • Hayriye Kayi, graduate student in TESOL (advisor Rod Case), has published an article in the NNEST Newsletter about her awareness of her non-nativeness when applying for a graduate assistantship.

  • Literacy Studies students study in Chile with faculty members Cindy Brock and Julie Pennington as part of the University Studies Abroad Consortium.

  • Read about Tünde Csepelyi, doctoral student in EDS (advisor Julie Pennington) and "NNEST Caucus member the month." Tünde was interviewed about her perspectives as a student and a teacher in TESOL in the NNEST Caucus Forum.

  • David and Regina Smith, doctoral students in literacy studies, are featured in the UNR Graduate School Newsletter, fall 2006.

  • Donald Bear, Professor in Literacy Studies, is quoted in an AP article about a move toward simplifying American spelling.

  • Lynda Wiest, Associate Professor in math education, is named as one of the 2006 Women of Achievement

  • Shane Templeton is quoted in the Reno Gazette Journal, "Skip Football; Spelling is Really Hot." Shane is Regents' Professor of Literacy Studies

  • Articles appeared on 2/23/06 in the Reno Gazette Journal and in Nevada News about the choice of teaching as a second career. Information about teacher licensure programs in EDS

  • Picture and article about Elementary/Special Education (B.S.) and Literacy Studies (M.Ed.) graduate Sarah Ledon can be seen in the Nevada Silver & Blue, November/December, 2005

  • Girl's Math and Technology Camp is featured in the Reno Gazette Journal and the Nevada News, summer 2005

  • Diane Barone is quoted in US News and World Report, "The Power of Potter." Summer, 2005. Diane is professor of Literacy Studies

  • The reputation and scholarship of the Literacy Studies faculty attracted the International Reading Association’s 49th annual convention to Reno in May of 2004.

  • Christine Cheney was awarded the 2002 Tibbitt's Distinguished Teaching Award for UNR. Chris is professor of Special Education and EDS Department Chair
