Dianna Townsend, Assistant Professor of Literacy Studies, is involved in a researching the relationship between literacy and physical fitness. Educational Specialties unveiled three new-format graduate programs in fall of 2009. Two of our master's degrees, Equity and Diversity in Educational Settings and Literacy Studies, will be available on-line in addition to the campus-based program. A 15-credit Graduate Certificate in TESOL will prepare those who want to teach English abroad or to new-comers, as well as allow teachers to earn the Nevada ESL endorsement.
Christine Cheney, Department Chair and Professor of Special Education, and Tammy Abernathy, Associate Professor of Special Education, were awarded funding for Project EXCEL. This is a Program Improvement Project through the Office of Special Education Programs, US Department of Education, and will be supported from July, 2009 through June of 2014. The goals of EXCEL are to further strengthen the Integrated Elementary/Special Education program through recruitment, collaboration, and mentorship.
The Research in Romania Project is featured in the Fulbright Romania Newsletter, June 2009, reflecting the many activities of UNR faculty and students. The first issue of the Research in Romania Newsletter is also available. More information about the Research in Romania Project.
The Lemelson Project, which includes cohorts of teachers in Literacy Studies, was featured in the Winter 2008 issue of Silver and Blue. The 2008 Year End Report can be read here.
The Nevada Dual Sensory Impairment Project has received federal funding for five additional years. MaryAnn Demchak, professor of special education, is the author of the grant and Project-Director. The project provides technical assistance and lends materials to teachers and families of children (birth through age 22) who have both hearing and visual impairments. In addition, the project received funding from the Hilton/Perkins Program to support its annual parent conference.

Important dates for Fall, 2009:
- Spring registration will begin in November of 2009. Register early. Tuition and fee payments are due the week before classes start, not at the time of registration. Be sure to check the payment deadline to avoid late fees.
- Check the official campus calendar for all university holidays, deadlines, and other important dates.
- Graduate students' applications for graduation are due OCTOBER 1 for DECEMBER Graduation (more information)
- First Step meetings are required for all students who want to apply for Supervised Internship in spring semester of 2010. To sign up for a meeting, go to the Office of Field Experiences (WRB 2004) in the first two weeks of the semester.

- Portfolios for students seeking to enroll in Supervised Internship for the spring of 2010 are due in the EDS Office (WRB 3067) on Monday, November 30 (with pickup on December 18 or later).
