Teruni Lamberg is an assistant professor in Elementary Mathematics Education. She teaches graduate and undergraduate classes in mathematics education. Her areas of research interests include teacher education, children’s mathematical thinking and technology in mathematics education.
Teacher Education:
Her research examines how teachers learn, and how to effectively support teachers to improve their teaching. Therefore, her work also includes examining the role of the institutional context and partnerships and their influence on mathematics instruction. She worked on a professional development research project funded by the National Science Foundation with Paul Cobb and Kay McClain at Vanderbilt University as part of her post doctoral work. This project examined the development of Professional Teaching Communities. She is currently the principal investigator of the Northeastern Nevada Mathematics Project a Math Science Partnership grant funded through the U.S Department of Education, a three year sub-grant awarded through the Nevada Department of Education.
Children’s Mathematical Thinking:
She investigates how children think mathematically. She is particularly interested in children’s development of mathematical understanding of fractions, division and algebraic thinking. She conducted a whole class teaching experiment on how children develop understanding. She is currently examining data on children’s mathematical thinking as part of the Northeastern Nevada Math Project. Her work also involves examining the role of inscriptions in discourse.
Technology in Mathematics Education:
Lamberg is interested in integrating technology in teaching. She developed an Anchored instruction video on fractions and is currently exploring the development of video games to support the learning of fractions.
Lamberg is actively involved in the mathematics education community. She serves on the board of Nevada Math Council. She was elected as Chair of the Psychology of Mathematics Education Northern American Chapter organization in 2007.
