Availability of Programs

Find out if your school has a reading teacher or literacy specialist. If so, contact this person to see what is available at your child’s school for children who have difficulties learning to read and write. If there is no reading teacher, contact the principal or school counselor. You might also contact your local school district reading coordinator to find out about other district programs.

Washoe County, Nevada. Washoe County has many opportunities for students who need help in the areas of reading and writing. Several schools in Washoe County have had Reading Buddies programs. Presently, you will find Reading Buddies programs at three schools: Westergard Elementary School, Agnes Risley Elementary School, Warner Elementary School.

University Programs. Another possibility is to contact your local university to see if they have any literacy programs available for children. A good place to look is in the College of Education. The E. L. Cord Foundation Center for Learning and Literacy at the University of Nevada is one place for students to go to receive individual or small group help. They can be reached at 775-784-4951.

Other Locations. As we write more about our programs, we have had more requests for information. Several of us are working with school districts and talking to individual teachers to help them set up similar programs in California and Florida.

Ways to Obtain Training. You can contact the E. L. Cord Foundation Center for Learning and Literacy at the University of Nevada, Reno. There are many classes and programs available that provide the needed literacy training:
