Transportation Concerns

Transportation arrangements may be an initial concern when getting the Reading Buddies program underway. This obviously will become an essential element to consider when Reading Buddies is set up as an after-school program. This may be the case in outlying areas where a greater number of students are bused to school. Transportation issues should be addressed and worked out prior to beginning the Reading Buddies program since the success of this program relies heavily on student attendance and punctuality.

The coordinator of the program should consider the various options available to their area. The coordinator should also consider maintaining the necessary permission slips and release from liability forms required by their district.

Here are some possible solutions for transporting children from school to home, after the tutoring:

  • Parent pick up
  • Walk from site
  • Bicycle from site
  • Parent car pools
  • Public transportation
  • Students enrolled simultaneously in after school latch-key program until students can be picked up
  • Find funding from the Department of Education (state or federal) to cover extended school busing hours
  • Write grants to cover transportation costs through your school district
  • Seek support from your PTA or PTO
  • Seek parent volunteers within the school who are willing to chaperone
