Biographical Information

Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin, Madison 1970

 

Professor Smaby has been at the University of Nevada, Counseling and Educational Psychology Department since 1992, previously he was a professor of counseling at the University of Minnesota for 21 years. Prior to his career as a counselor educator, he was a public school teacher and the first elementary school counselor in the state of Wisconsin. Professor Smaby has published over 75 articles in counseling journals and made over 130 presentations at international, national, regional and state conferences and has been an journal editor for Counselor Education and Supervision and The Journal for Human Service and Counseling Professionals. He currently is completing a textbook on counseling skills.

Counseling skills, developing counseling related personality traits, counseling outcome measurement, counseling performance assessment and using technology in counseling.

 

Teaching / Interest

Professor Smaby teaches introduction to counseling and school counseling internships. He believes that counseling students have the ability and responsibility to master counseling skills, apply them to clients and evaluate their work. His cognitive behavioral approach to counseling and teaching is characterized by clear expectations, learning by doing, and accountability. Professor Smaby is an avid biker, swimmer and skier and enjoys living close to the Sierras with his wife of 40 years and dog, Lucky.
