Electrical Engineering, Master of Science Degree


Overview


The master's degree program in electrical engineering is designed to be flexible, with few required courses so that you can work with your faculty advisors to select coursework suited to your interests and career goals. Our program offers you the range of education needed to take on leadership roles within electrical engineering as well as develop knowledge of physical sciences and professional techniques.

Students pursuing a master's degree in electrical engineering can choose from two degree options:

  1. Thesis option: Students complete coursework in electrical engineering and write a thesis on a specific topic of interest within the field. Primary areas of focus in our department include image and signal processing, electromagnetics and microwaves, and power systems and renewable energy.
  2. Non-thesis option: This track allows students to complete a professional paper and comprehensive examination in lieu of an academic thesis. Your comprehensive exams will have both an oral and written component. The written exam focuses on topics covered during your coursework, while the oral exam also includes your professional paper. 

Specific course requirements will be worked out with your advisory committee, in compliance with department and Graduate School guidelines, and filed as part of your Program of Study. The Program of Study is the formal specification of courses and credits required to earn your degree.

Admissions


Applicants to the master's degree program in electrical engineering should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Combined GRE (V + Q)  scores of 301 (1100 in old system)
  • Quantitative GRE scores of 156 (720 in old system)
  • Analytical GRE score of 4/6 (3.5 in old system)
  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • TOEFL: 550 (or >216 computerized or >79/120 Internet-based or IELTS >7/9 Academic Version)

Exceptions to these requirements may be made for students who show excellence in one or more areas of electrical engineering. Students who do not meet admissions requirements may be admitted provided they complete a prescribed program of remedial classes.

Applicants to the program who don't hold a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering must show competency in circuits and signals and systems. They can either complete a specified undergraduate course in these topics or show mastery by completing an exam. Additionally, students must demonstrate proficiency in three of the five following areas of specialization, either through coursework or an exam:

  1. Electromagnetics
  2. Electronics
  3. Computers
  4. Control
  5. Power

Fall semester:

  • March 15 for international applicants
  • June 15 for U.S. applicants

Spring semester:

  • August 15 for international applicants
  • November 15 for U.S. applicants

Financial support

Master's degree students are eligible to apply for a teaching or research assistantship as well as two departmental scholarships.

Teaching assistantships are available for students with a minimum GPA of 3.3 and are awarded through the department. Research assistantships are awarded by individual faculty. Contact the department to learn more about available assistantships.

Students can also apply for two fellowships: the Dickinson Fellowship, which requires a GPA of 3.2 or higher, and the Turner Fellowship. Contact the department for application information.
