In observance of National Disability Awareness Month, the University of Nevada, Reno is hosting a series of free events and lectures in October 2007 as part of its ongoing initiative to increase awareness, accessibility and opportunities for people with disabilities within the university community.

October 1, noon: Coming Home: The Effects of War Across Generations
Monday, Oct. 1, noon - 1:30 p.m.
Location: UNR, Jot Travis Student Union, Room 244.
The University's SAGE (Scholars in Aging and Ethics) Consortium and Veterans Services host a discussion of the effects of war experienced by veterans over time. Topics include the impacts on family dynamics and the aging process, differentiating between the veteran and the war, and community resources. FREE

The University's SAGE Consortium, ASUN Gerontology Club, ASUN Wolf Pack Veterans and School of Social Work present Michial Nolan, MSW, giving a compelling multimedia presentation on the recurrence of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Vietnam veterans as a result of the Iraq war.
October 2, 6:00 PM: Film: "Born on the Fourth of July"

The ASUN Gerontology Club and ASUN Wolf Pack Veterans present this Academy Award-winning 1989 film based on the life of Ron Kovic, a Vietnam War veteran who became an anti-war and pro-human rights political activist. Discussion will follow the movie.
October 3, 5:30 PM: SAGE Circle Discussion: Ethical and Aging Issues Faced by Veterans

The University's SAGE Consortium and School of Medicine present this panel discussion featuring medical practitioners discussing research findings and new services available in the Reno healthcare community to veterans returning from combat who have been traumatized by their experiences.

Special guest appearance by watercolor artist Karen Wheeler

October 10, 7:00 PM: Disability Awareness Month presents I. King Jordan

Location: UNR, Church Fine Arts Building, Nightingale Concert Hall
Dr. I. King Jordan, President Emeritus of Gallaudet University, will deliver this year's keynote address for the University of Nevada, Reno's Disability Awareness Month. Dr. Jordan made history in 1988 when he became the first deaf person to lead a university in the United States. A reception will follow at the Front Door Gallery adjacent to Nightingale Concert Hall.
