Master of Arts in French

The mission of the graduate program is to educate students in French language, culture, and literature at the highest possible level, to provide students with a broad knowledge base from which to pursue more-specialized studies, and to offer a depth of experience in scholarship that will advance their future professional activities.

The student must meet the general university requirements for admission to graduate standing. In addition, each student must have acquired a degree of proficiency in a foreign language approved by the department, and generally must have a grade- point average no lower than 3.0 in the major field of concentration as an undergraduate.

  • Plan A requires 30 graduate units. At least 18 units, including six thesis credits, must be in 700-level courses. If a minor is approved, at least six graduate credits are required in the minor area.
  • Plan B requires 32 graduate units. At least 15 units must be in 700-level courses. No thesis is required. If a minor is approved, a minimum of nine graduate credits are required in the minor area.
