Ecohydrology is a science that sits at the intersection of water and ecology and focuses on finding solutions to issues surrounding water, people and the environment.
In the minor in ecohydrology, you'll study the hydrological cycle and learn about its effects on ecological processes and human communities.
The interdisciplinary minor includes courses that are drawn from fields like biology, geology, and natural resources and environmental science. You'll take classes on topics such as ecology and population biology, wildland hydrology, and soil science.
Ecohydrology offers a number of opportunities to get out of the classroom and conduct research or field work in the natural laboratories surrounding the University campus. You can add to your education by taking advantage of opportunities to work with your professors on real-world research on topics such as mountain hydrology, plant-soil-water interaction and water sustainability.

The minor in ecohydrology prepares you for careers working in the water industry. Depending on your major, you may choose a career focused on the science of water systems or you may choose to work in a field that focuses on policy and advocacy around environmental issues.
If you choose to pursue a career in hydrology, you can find entry-level employment with a bachelor's degree in a related field, including environmental science. Some careers may require a master's degree or additional education. Hydrologists collect and analyze data to better understand the water supply and develop ways to improve water quality, availability and sustainability.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, hydrologists had a median annual wage of $84,030 in 2021. The Bureau projects a 6 percent growth in jobs for hydrologists from 2020 to 2030 due to increased concerns about climate change and both flooding and drought, depending on the area. Growth in both human population and human activities such as construction and mining will also create demand for hydrologists who can help assess and manage the impact of humans on previously uninhabited areas.
