Email Configuration

This section provides the information necessary to configure email client software to connect to the Department of Computer Science & Engineering mail server. Step-by-step guides are available for configuring Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, and Netscape. For other e-mail clients, please use the server information provided.

Server Information

The following information describes the configuration of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering e-mail server:

Incoming Mail

  • Server: mail.cse.unr.edu
  • Type: IMAP
  • Security: SSL
  • Port: 993

Outgoing Mail (if on-campus)

  • Server: smtp.unr.edu
  • Type: SMTP
  • Security: None
  • Port: 25

You can only send e-mail messages using your account if you are on campus (using the Outgoing Mail settings), or using Webmail. Otherwise, you must use the your own ISP's mail server to send e-mail.

Step-By-Step: Microsoft Outlook

  1. Select Tools -> E-mail Accounts from the menu at the top of the screen
  2. Select Add new e-mail account and click Next
  3. Select IMAP as the type of mail server and click Next
  4. Enter your name, e-mail address, username, and password
  5. Enter the server addresses using the Server Information above
  6. Click the More Settings button
  7. Click on the Advanced tab
  8. For both the incoming and outgoing servers, select the checkbox that says This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)
  9. Click OK to close this screen
  10. Click Next
  11. Click Finish
  12. Click Yes if you are prompted to accept security certificates from the new server

Step-By-Step: Microsoft Outlook Express

  1. Select Tools -> Accounts from the menu at the top of the screen
  2. Click the Add button at the upper-right corner and select Mail
  3. Enter your Display Name (the name you want displayed when people receive messages from you) and click Next
  4. Enter your E-mail Address and click Next
  5. For the server type, select IMAP from the drop-down box at the top
  6. Enter the server addresses using the Server Information above and click Next
  7. Enter your username and password, then click Next
  8. Click Finish
  9. With the new account selected, click Properties
  10. Click the Advanced tab
  11. For both the incoming and outgoing servers, select the checkbox that says This server requires an encrypted connection(SSL)
  12. Click OK
  13. Click Close
  14. Click Yes to download new mail from the new server
  15. Click Yes if you are prompted to accept security certificates from the new server

Step-By-Step: Netscape

Netscape allows either one POP3 mail server or multiple IMAP mail servers to be listed in your Incoming Mail Servers List. To get mail from any of the UNR mail servers, you will need at least one IMAP server on your list, which means that you cannot have any POP3 servers on the list. You must remove any existing POP3 mail servers from the list before you can add any of the UNR IMAP servers to the list, otherwise you will receive error messages.

  1. Select Edit -> Preferences from the menu at the top of the screen
  2. In the Category window, click the plus next to Mail & Newsgroups to expand it
  3. Under Mail & Newsgroups, click Identity
  4. Fill out the appropriate information
  5. Under Mail & Newsgroups click on Mail Servers
  6. Click the Add button
  7. Under Server Name enter the Department of Computer Science & Engineering mail server: mail.cse.unr.edu
  8. Under Server Type, select IMAP
  9. Enter your username and password in the appropriate fields.
  10. Click on the IMAP tab
  11. Select the option Use Secure Connection
  12. Click OK to close the window
  13. Select the option Remove deleted mail immediately
  14. Set the Outgoing Mail Server to use the same mail server, username, and password you supplied for the for the previous steps
  15. Change the SSL option to Always
  16. Click OK to close the window
