Often times personal problems arise from interpersonal or relationship challenges or dysfunctions.
Once a negative pattern of behavior or dynamic takes root in a relationship, it can be extremely difficult to resolve the problem without the professional guidance of an objective third party. In a setting of mutual respect and with a focus on common goals and desired outcomes, our counselors can assist you and your partner, roommate or friend in resolving your conflict(s) and learning new skills that will promote a better relationship going forward. To make an appointment for couple’s or relationship counseling, please visit or call our office.
Living with a roommate can be a great experience, as many roommates become lifelong friends. However the experience can turn sour when roommates have a conflict that doesn't get resolved. To prevent this from happening to you each conflict should be addressed in a productive, healthy way. Setting aside a quiet, uninterrupted time to have a discussion is a good start. Establishing ground rules such as allowing each other time to talk, maintaining honesty and finding a way to agree on the desired outcome(s) will assist in the process. If your conflict seems more serious than what you can handle alone, the Counseling Center is here to help. Please stop by or call to schedule an appointment.
Romantic Relationship Issues
Even the best relationships sometimes take work. The desire to proactively work on a relationship is a sign of maturity and respect for both yourself and your partner. When conflict arises, try establishing agreed upon conflict resolution rules- such staying focused on the issue at hand and avoiding personal attacks, which can only create defensiveness in your partner and escalate the conflict. Also, framing your grievances in terms of "I feel" statements will help your partner, in turn, feel less defensive and more empathetic towards your concerns. If your relationship problems exceed your ability to resolve them, the Counseling Center is here to help. Please stop by or call to schedule an appointment.
