The Mining Engineering Department attracts students who do well in math and science and who are interested in exploring and developing natural resources, while providing a sustainable environment for future generations.
Our class sizes are small which creates a personal, hands-on educational experience. It makes for a friendly department where everyone is known and students feel a sense of belonging.
Apply to the University of Nevada, Reno as a new freshman or transfer student.
Besides satisfying the University’s admissions requirements, success in the program depends on math placement www.unr.edu/mathcenter/placement_incoming.html.
Many Mining Engineering students qualify for the Honors Program.
Because of the program’s close ties to industry and a generous network of alumni, mining engineering students can qualify, on a competitive basis, for scholarships beyond the University and the Millennium scholarships. Please apply to the University and be accepted by February 1 of each year and indicate Mining Engineering as your major. There is no separate Mackay scholarship application. Your information will be forwarded from the University’s Scholarship Office to Mackay for scholarship consideration. Scholarships are merit-based and range from $500 to $5,000 a year.
To encourage more young men and women to pursue careers related to
mining and to ensure the availability of qualified mining engineers for
the future, there are scholarships specifically for new freshmen and
transfer students. These scholarships come from Barrick Gold North
America, Newmont Mining Corporation, and from an endowment in memory of
W. Howard Winn, a metallurgical engineer remembered as a mentor to those
in the minerals industry. As with all Mackay scholarships, there is no
separate application and new students will automatically be considered for these prestigious scholarship awards.
Great opportunities for summer PAID internships are available for mining engineering students. Although the students must apply and interview for these positions themselves, information about University job/career/internship fairs, industry contacts, and informational sessions and interviews with specific employers is available through the Arentz Student Center or through faculty in the department.
