Putnam Mathematical Competition
2007 Competition
The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is an annual event open to undergraduate students from universities in the US and Canada. This year's competition had 3753 students from 516 colleges participate. Students compete both individially as well as part of a 3-person team representing their institution. The team from UNR, consisting of William Taylor, Michael Gallaspy and Alexander Lang and with Alex Dussaq as an alternate, placed 77th.

The exam consists of a series of very challenging problems in two 3-hour
sessions - one half of the contestants scored 0 or 1 or 2 out of 120 points. Taylor
and Gallaspy each scored 12, making it into the
top 20%, and Lang and Dussaq followed close behind with scores of 10 and 9.
To prepare for the December 1 competition, students participated in weekly
problem solving sessions in October and November run by Dr. Deaconu and Dr.
Pfaff. A problem solving course Math 419 taught by Dr. Ramazan has also
provided helpful training.
We congratulate our students on their success.
