Summer Geology Field Camp
The Department of Geological Sciences & Engineering, University of Nevada, Reno offers a comprehensive, capstone, six credit, six-week summer geology field camp.
Using a geologic transect from the western margin of the craton to the active continental margin of northern California, field camp students will gain both an understanding of crustal evolution of western North America and mapping experience in classic localities including:
- The Paleozoic passive margin
- Mesozoic fold and thrust belts
- High angle normal faults and detachment faults of the Basin and Range province
- Quaternary deposits and landforms that record a dynamic history of environmental change-
- The transform plate boundary between the Pacific and North American plates
- Mesozoic-Cenozoic volcanic arcs in the Sierra Nevada region
For the first two weeks of the geology field camp, we will utilize our permanent field station in Ruth, Nevada. Other parts of the field camp will involve a mobile camp in parts of Western Nevada, the Sierra Nevada and coast of Northern California.
Especially memorable study areas during the field camp will include:
- Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
- Notch Peak, Utah
- Great Basin National Park, Nevada
- Star Peak, Nevada
- Lake Tahoe, California
- Tioga Pass and Yosemite National Park, California
- Point Reyes National Seashore, California
Students from all over the U.S. have taken our Geology Summer Field Camp.
