RALPH J. ROBERTS CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN ECONOMIC GEOLOGY (CREG)

Through the Ralph J. Roberts Center for Research in Economic Geology (CREG), the Department of Geological Sciences, UNR, the Nevada Mining Industry, and the U. S. Geological Survey have formed a partnership to develop a world-class program of education and research in Economic Geology and Mineral Deposits. The Ralph J. Roberts Center for Research in Economic Geology is part of the Department of Geological Sciences, Mackay School of Mines. The Center, named for Dr. Ralph J. Roberts, a pioneering geologist formerly with the U. S. Geological Survey credited with the initial discovery of the Carlin trend, is led by a Director and is guided by a Steering Committee composed of members of the Nevada Mining Industry and the USGS.

Major funding for the Center is provided by the Nevada Mining Industry, and facilities and scientific expertise of the University of Nevada, Reno, the U. S. Geological Survey, and the Nevada Mining Industry are available. Carlin type gold deposits are the primary focus of programs of research and education in the Center at the present time. By this name, we refer to "sediment-hosted, disseminated, stratabound yet structurally controlled precious metal mineralization." Two mutually supportive goals are:

  • Preparing well-educated professionals for careers in the Mining Industry and research by exposing them to a wealth of expertise within the School, the Industry, and the USGS
  • Producing high-quality research results on topics of critical interest to the Nevada Mining Industry. Collateral benefits include increasing cooperation, collaboration, and communication among the various participating groups.
