OVERVIEW

This lesson will give the student a sense of place for Russia through story, music, and dance.

GRADES

Grades 3 - 9.

CONNECTION TO THE CIRRICULUM

Geography, Language, Arts, Physical Education, History, and Music.

STANDARDS

#6 The influence of culture and experience upon people's perceptions of places and regions.

TIME

2 - 3, 50-minute class periods.

MATERIALS

OBJECTIVES

The student will:
A. be familiar with one or more Russian Folk tunes
B. be able to perform simple dance steps
C. be able to dance with a group
D. have a better understanding of life in Northern Russia

PROCEDURES

1. Read the story Masha's Russian Summer.
2. Discuss the story.
3. Play the music of selected dance.
4. Explain the dance steps.
5. Demonstrate.
6. Practice walking through the dance without music.
7. Practice 2 or 3 times with music.
8. Review dance within a week.

EXTENSIONS

1. Learn one of the other Russian Dances.
2. Learn a dance from another country.
3. Prepare a dance festival.
4. Have the students develop their own dances.
5. Make simple costumes.
6. Study the region or country the dance comes from.
7. Discuss the food eaten by Masha's family, compare to American food.
