Mathematics Requirement

The mathematics requirement is centered on three principles.

  1. Students should have a basic education in mathematical skills and concepts;
  2. Students should take other courses that utilize these skills and concepts;
  3. Learning how to learn is critical for student success.

It is also important to realize that the development of quantitative literacy skills is not only essential for success in Core, and higher level, math courses, but also in other Core areas. In addition, quantitative literacy is one of the foundational skills required of an informed citizenry.

The precise requirement depends on a student's major. Please see your advisor and consult degree requirements.

Information regarding Math placement and course selection is available in the current class schedule and by following the "advising & placement" or "core math" link on the Mathematics and Statistics Department web site.

Specific information regarding math placement tests, and general information about the Math Center, can be found at the following site: http://www.unr.edu/mathcenter/placement

MATH 120 Fundamentals of College Mathematics 3 credits
*MATH 127 Precalculus II (Introduced fall 2006, SEE FOOTNOTE) 3 credits
MATH 128 Precalculus and Trigonometry

(Those students not ready for the speedy pace of MATH128 should consider the equivalent two-semester sequence MATH 126+MATH127)

5 credits
* STAT 152 Introduction to Statistics (SEE FOOTNOTE) 3 credits
MATH 176 Introductory Calculus for Business and Social Sciences 3 credits
MATH 181 Calculus I 4 credits
*APST 270 Introduction to Statistical Methods (SEE FOOTNOTE) 3 credits

FOOTNOTE

*For Core credit in MATH 127, APST 270, or STAT 152 (previously MATH 152) students must demonstrate algebra proficiency by earning a grade of C- or better in MATH 126, or an appropriate score on the Accuplacer test administered by the Math Center.

N.B. At the beginning of fall 2007, MATH 124 was phased out and MATH 126 was introduced to the UNR curriculum. As a result any previous reference to MATH 124 will be replaced by MATH 126.
