Information for Faculty

Process for Approval of Existing Courses to Core Level Designation

Instructions to the faculty member:

The proposals need to include the following:

  1. A memo explaining how the course meets the five guidelines for the capstone area, diversity guidelines or mission of the specific core area being addressed. Please address each guideline specifically.
  2. Provide information regarding course assessment of student learning and assessment as it relates to the core curriculum objectives. Student assessment, any external assessment and/or any newly planned methods of assessment.
  3. Include a syllabus for the course. This should include course texts, goals, student reading and writing requirements, and a schedule that indicates how many days or weeks of the course are devoted to each major topic or issue.
  4. Table of contents of class assigned readers.
  5. Explicit information regarding grading.
  6. Explicit information regarding integration of oral communication skills or presentations, the writing component, exams. Also, include any information regarding computation or math literacy skills where appropriate.
  7. Language within the syllabus that clearly indicates to students that this course is a capstone and requires them to integrate skills and knowledge gained throughout their development in the core curriculum.
