The University is the state's historic land-grant institution, with the unique mission of extending teaching, consultation and research across Nevada. From four campuses in Reno, Las Vegas and Elko, and offices in every county, this outreach spans agriculture, business and economic development, health care, the environment and other quality of life issues, including the pursuit of alternative energy sources.
University faculty and staff are "strategic partners" to the Silver State, providing students with opportunities to learn and gain experience in addressing community issues and opportunities. For instance, the University's Cooperative Extension and Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station faculty work to improve quality of life by enhancing agricultural crop production, reducing contaminants in drinking water, and conserving water resources. The new School of Public Health is focused on examining and improving the general health of Nevadans. And business and economic development activities include the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, which plays a central role in supporting Nevada's mining industry — the state's third-largest revenue source after gaming and tourism.
