The candlelit New Student Opening Ceremony welcomes newcomers on their journey to becoming scholars at Nevada.
Scholarship covers a lot of territory at Nevada. A midsize university with more than 16,000 students from around the country and the world, Nevada offers almost 75 undergraduate majors, along with more than 60 degree programs at the master's and doctoral levels. Nationally recognized programs include environmental literature and sciences, biotechnology, hydrology and earthquake engineering.
All undergraduates enroll in the Core Curriculum, which provides a classic liberal-arts education at a fraction of the price of similar prestigious private programs.
Nevada was one of the first universities to emphasize undergraduate research for all students. Undergrad research helps students learn to develop and communicate new ideas, and pursue them in a systematic way.
Outside the classroom, students enjoy whitewater kayaking, snowboarding, rock climbing and many other recreational challenges in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Lake Tahoe's waters or the Great Basin desert.
