The University of Nevada Logistics Council (UNLC) is the student organization for logistics students. The purpose of UNLC is to further a student’s understanding of the logistics profession by providing opportunities to gain practical knowledge in the field of logistics. This is accomplished through tours, professional speakers, and bi-weekly meetings. UNLC sponsors several tours yearly. Recent tours have included CON-WAY, NUMMI, Port of Oakland, and Budweiser.
Along with these trips, UNLC also organizes tours of manufacturing and distribution firms in the local business community. Internship Programs Many logistics management graduates gain practical work experience, insight into the business world, and knowledge through internship programs. Recent interns have been placed at Arrow Electronics, the Coca-Cola Company, Ford Motor Company, Dreyers Grand Ice Cream, J.C. Penney Catalog Distribution, Microsoft, Porsche Cars of North America, Sun Microsystems, Perrier Greatwaters, and Daimler-Chrysler Corporation. These companies find the intern program beneficial in many ways. First, the advantage of having temporary help during periods of need; second, the ability to conduct special projects that regular employees would not have had the time to perform; and third, the opportunity to evaluate a student on a no-risk basis for further permanent employment after graduation.
