How I Integrate Technology Into the Classroom:

As a building trades teacher, technology is used every day in my classes, from simple every day hand tools to state of the art CNC milling machines. Students learn employable skills by using tools of the trade to design, plan, build, construct and sometimes demolish projects. These projects may be as simple as a wooden plaque, as elegant as a china cabinet or as demanding as a residential home. These tools include computers for design, controlling milling machines, searching the internet for ideas, information, materials and supplies. Even though many of the tools we use have been around for years, they are always evolving. An example of this is the ordinary hammer--a traditional example would have a head made of ordinary heat treated steel, may weigh 22 ounces, and have a hickory handle. Its modern counterpart has a titanium head, fiberglass, titanium or hickory handle and may weigh only 14 ounces yet command greater driving force because of its modern materials. More and more tools are being designed ergonomically to reduce fatigue, injury and stress. Power tools are being manufactured with state of the art safety devices that protect the user from potentially deadly injury. Battery operated tools are advancing so rapidly that they often equal their ac powered counterpart. Few jobs sites in the U.S.A. are without one or more battery power tools. Technology is all around us and most of us use it every day without giving it a second thought. Some examples include: solar calculators, laptop computers, cell phones, pagers, plastic lens glasses, mechanical pencils, electronic measuring devices, electronic levels, laser levels, wireless connections of all types, hand held PDA,s, e-mail, etc. Can you think of items that you use every day that were either none existent, too big or expensive to own ten years ago? What about 20? 30? Suddenly the list becomes very large!

Interesting Fact:
