Tutoring at the Center

The E. L. Cord Foundation Center for Learning and Literacy focuses on tutoring elementary children beginning in the first grade. We offer several specialized reading programs throughout the year. This twenty-session program is held throughout the fall, spring, and summer semesters at the Center. This tutorial program is an important part of an advanced literacy instruction class for graduate students seeking advanced degrees. As a part of their course work in Reading and Language Arts, Education majors at the University of Nevada, Reno tutor children. The children range in grade level from first through eighth grade. During the school year the children come to the Center for an hour and fifteen minutes, two days a week for 20 sessions. During the summer semester, children attend the tutorial program five days per week in the morning, for one and one half hours, for four weeks. Generally, instruction is one to one. However, occasionally students are grouped to take advantage of similar developmental levels.

Tutorial instruction, based on the child’s development, is composed of four activities: read to, read with, word study and writing. The children who attend the tutorial reading programs range from one to two years below their grade level in reading, spelling and writing.
