Diane Barone is a Professor in the Department of Educational Specialties and teaches courses in literacy and diversity and qualitative research. Her research interests focus on children who represent diversity. Her books include Developing Literacy: An Integrated Approach to Assessment and Instruction and Resilient Children.
Donald Bear, Ph.D.

Donald Bear is a Professor in the Department of Educational Specialties and is Director of the E. L. Cord Foundation Center for Learning and Literacy . Recent studies have examined developmental orthography across languages, math and reading relationships, reading fluency and expression, literacy assessment and difficulties. He is the first author of Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction (3rd ed.), the Words Their Way Video and CD, and Developing Literacy: An Integrated Approach to Assessment and Instruction.

Cynthia Brock, Ph.D.
Michigan State University, 1997

Cynthia Brock is an Assistant Professor of Literacy Studies at the University of Nevada Reno. Her primary research interests include exploring literacy learning opportunities for children from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds in mainstream classrooms and exploring sociocultural perspectives on student learning.

Julie Pennington, Ph.D.
University of Texas at Austin, 2002

Julie Pennington is an assistant professor in literacy studies. Her research focus is on cultural constructions and definitions of literacy, critical race theory, and ethnographic methods in social action research. Julie teaches courses in emergent reading and writing methods for classroom teachers, critical literacy, and qualitative methods.

Shane Templeton, Ph.D.
University of Virginia, 1976

Shane Templeton is Foundation Professor of the Department of Educational Specialties and Program Coordinator for Literacy Studies. His research has focused on metalinguistic awareness and on the development of orthographic knowledge. His books include Teaching the Integrated Language Arts (2nd ed.), Children’s Literacy: Contexts for Meaningful Learning, and Words their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction (with Donald Bear and Marcia Invernizzi).
