The Early Learning Center

Philosophy of the ELC: The Early Learning Center is a multiaged (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) grade classroom housed in the College of Education. This classroom serves as a model of current teaching practices for undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, and administrators. This classroom also serves as a research site for studies focused on literacy.

Applications for Enrollment to the ELC: Parents can place their child’s name on the applicant list at Sierra Vista Elementary School beginning the first Monday after Spring Break of WCSD.

A representative from the University of Nevada, Reno will contact parents on the list by the end of the week to discuss the assessment and entrance process that is followed.

The ELC is a unique educational environment and there are a few important points to keep in mind when you consider the ELC.

• The ELC is a WSCD (grades 1,2,3) classroom held in the Raggio College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno.
  
• Parents must provide their own transportation to and from the ELC each day. The students selected to receive a variance must adhere to the variance restrictions completely, at all times.
  
• Since there is no on-site administrator, nurse or special educator, the individual needs of students as they may involve these and allied personnel is considered for both selection and retention in the ELC. Special needs students or ESL students will follow an inclusive model and will not be taken out of the classroom for special classes.
  
• This is a model WCSD classroom, and students are selected from several developmental levels with the aim to model a diverse student population that is typically found in our district.
  
• This is a 3-year program and students who enroll are expected to stay in the program throughout the three years.
