Admission Procedures

1. Apply to the Graduate School for admission to the appropriate graduate program. This information is on the website for UNR. You should list Literacy Studies as your major area.

2. If you wish to begin some coursework while awaiting approval for admission to the graduate program, you may apply to the Office of Admissions and Records for admittance as a Graduate Special student. Graduate Special students may take up to nine graduate credit hours that may apply toward a graduate degree program. Consult with a Literacy Studies advisor concerning these courses before taking them.

3. Please note that you may transfer a maximum of only nine credits into a degree program. If you wish to transfer credits from another university, you may not be able to begin as a Graduate Special student.

4. Make arrangements to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) (ONLY the Verbal and Quantitative scores will be used toward the required minimum score) or the Miller Analogies Test (for Masters’ degrees) if you have an undergraduate GPA lower than a 3.0 or if you are pursuing Doctoral studies. Information about the exams can be obtained from Student Services in Thompson Hall (775-784-6196). Test preparation workshops are available through Testing Services (775-784-4648).

5. Once you are admitted into a program or before, set up an appointment with a member of the Literacy Studies faculty for advisement.
