The University |
The University of Nevada, Reno, one of seven institutions within the University and Community College System of Nevada, is located in the city of Reno in northwestern Nevada. Established in 1864, the year of the state’s admission into the Union, the university first offered classes in 1874 in Elko as one of the rare preparatory higher schools in the intermountain region. In 1885, the university was moved to Reno, near the center of the state’s population. The university is a constitutionally established, land-grant university and has served the state of Nevada as its only state-supported institution of higher education for almost 75 years. In that historical role, it has emerged as a doctoral-granting university with a focus on high-quality degree programs.
Today, the university’s 11 academic schools and colleges offer more
than 70 undergraduate degrees, 64 master’s degrees, and 17 Ph.D. and
Ed.D. programs. Ninety-eight percent of the faculty holds the highest degrees
attainable in their fields. The University of Nevada, Reno is accredited by
the Commission on Colleges of the Northwest Association, recognized by the
Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and by the U.S. Department of Education.
The University has been accredited since 1938 and is a member of the Western
Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). In addition to the Northwest
Association institutional accreditation, there are numerous university programs
that are accredited by their national professional accrediting organizations.
