The University of Nevada, Reno's Writing Center, one of the most comprehensive in the United
States, offers a variety of services and programs to the university and the community. The
center's principal mission is twofold. First, it assists students in improving the quality of the
academic writing they do for their courses. Second, it provides help to instructors who include
writing assignments as part of their course requirements.
To meet the first goal, tutors in the center work individually with students on their writing
assignments, covering all phases of the writing process:
- discovering topics and generating ideas
-
finding supporting materials
-
developing and organizing
-
styling and editing
Writing Center tutors may focus on any one of the phases of composing which the
student or instructor would like emphasized. Or they may review a composition after it
has been graded, with an eye to improving the student's performance on subsequent
assignments.
In addition to meeting students' immediate writing needs, the center provides the
following services:
- computer-aided instruction in writing and reasoning skills
- word processing in a writer-friendly atmosphere
-
application and exam preparation for graduate and professional school
-
collaborative assistance with writing cover letters and resumes
-
employer-based editing of cover letters and resumes
While the center provides the same types of assistance to both undergraduate and
graduate students, instructional tutors with advanced degrees and training are especially
suited to deal with the often more complex writing projects graduate study requires.
These tutors work individually with graduate students on their theses and dissertations, as
well as on papers required for courses. Further, the center offers workshops on
preparing to write theses and dissertations, and support groups for graduate students
with theses and dissertations already underway.
