Department of Theatre Mission Statement
The mission of the Theatre division of the department of Theatre and Dance is to expose undergraduate students to all aspects of theatre and help them to develop an understanding and appreciation of the arts and crafts of theatre and related fields.
The mission includes:
(1) providing service courses for students throughout the university which introduce the student to theatre as an artistic discipline and its place in society;
(2) academic and practical experiences, providing more specialized training for our undergraduate majors which will give them the knowledge and skills essential to enter their chosen theatrical field in order to achieve their career objectives;
(3) service and outreach to our undergraduate majors, the university, and the wider community.
To achieve this mission the faculty in the Theatre division engages in the following professional activities:
a. Teaching and related instructional activities;
b. Creative activities relating to the theatre and production program (Nevada Repertory Company) or production work with other on- or off-campus entities;
c. Service through providing direct artistic experience and maintaining a presence in the artistic fabric of the university and larger community.
Because of the collaborative nature of theatre production and the division’s need to provide an array of opportunities for majors, we give equal importance to the above categories of professional activities. We also recognize that an individual faculty member may be involved in more activities in one or two categories and less in another in any given semester.
Department of Dance Mission Statement
Central to the mission of the dance program at the University of Nevada, Reno is a liberal arts approach to training the complete dance artist. Students are engaged in the field at a variety of levels, both cognitive and kinetic, and the curriculum balances training of the body with development of critical thinking skills. The exploration of cross-disciplinary endeavors is strongly encouraged through course work and performance opportunities. We strive to produce dance artists that can engage in the larger dance community on multiple levels, from administrative to performative and education to industry. The Dance Program offers students a myriad of performance opportunities throughout the year as well as the opportunity for professional networking through guest artists residencies, participation in the American College Dance Festival, and guest appearances with local professional level companies such as Nevada Opera and AVA Ballet Theatre.
