Dr. Mariah D.R. Evans is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) and Coordinator of the Applied Statistics Program (APST); her appointment was jointly in CABNR until June 2011. Dr. Evans received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago in 1983. Before joining the University of Nevada, Reno in 2006, Dr. Evans was Senior Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Australia. In 2011, she received CABNR's annual Outstanding Researcher Award. She has published widely in social statistics, survey design and methods, social psychology and culture (especially on happiness, on attitudes and values concerning inequality and concerning emerging science and technology issues), social stratification (with special reference to home and school influences on education), comparative methods, and demography. Her research on rural communities includes social impact assessments, community resilience, and applications of the theory of planned behavior to wildfire preparedness and to childhood obesity prevention.
