Dr. Marta Elliott is Associate Professor of Sociology. She received her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1994. She joined the sociology faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1996. Her areas of research and teaching interests include the sociology of health and illness and the sociology of religion.
Over the 2008-9 academic year Dr. Elliott was a co-author on four articles published in refereed scholarly journals and co-author on seven presentations made at professional conferences. She was awarded a research grant from the National Science Foundation to study gender differences in the effects of stress on health, and continues her research on suicide funded by the Nevada Public Health Trust Fund. She also received funding internal to UNR to study the needs of student veterans, both at UNR and throughout the NSHE and recently issued a Needs Assessment of University of Nevada, Reno Student Veterans. She is Co-Chair of the recently founded UNR Veterans Coalition through which she advocates for the needs of veterans through-out the state, and she served on the 2008-9 admissions committee for the state medical school (UNSOM). In addition to teaching five courses and participating in five team-taught graduate seminars, she oversaw the completion of two PhD Dissertations (R.David Hayward and Edina Jambor) and one MA thesis (Morgan Green) and continues to advise several students on their graduate research.
