Great Basin Policy Research Institute

The Great Basin Research Institute was established in 1994 as an official part of the University of Nevada, Reno. The Institute's mission was refined through a two year collaborative study between the Library of Congress and the University of Nevada. The Study noted the distinct need for an independent research body to provide analytic studies and technical assistance on public policy concerns throughout the American West.

Following a report to the U.S. Congress, the Great Basin Policy Research Institute was authorized in Federal legislation to conduct research for federal, state and local governments, as well as private sector interests. The Institute also provides multi disciplinary research support relating to national, as well as international issues, and engages in a variety of educational programs.

The Institute's efforts are designed to increase the quality of the public debate, insure the full exposure of alternatives in the policy making process and provide access to research services for governmental agencies and private sector institutions when considering policy development and implementation strategies. The ultimate mission of the Great Basin Policy Research Institute is to assist government decision makers and the public in improving the effectiveness of public policy.

The GBPRI organizes research by assembling a team of experts drawn from both University of Nevada staff and resources, as well as the private sector.
