Music Minor

For students with majors in another field, The Department of Music offers two Music Minor tracks. Both tracks emphasize the development of an appreciation for different music genres, knowledge of music theory, exposure to the history of music, and applied experience in ensemble playing.

Music Minor Requirements 2010 - 2011

Students with majors in another field may minor in music with an emphasis on General Music Interest by completing the following:

  • Music Minor Music Interest (20 - 21 credits)
    • Core Courses (9 credits)
      • MUS 100--Concert Attendance (satisfactory completion of three semesters) (0 credits) - Development of listening skills through attendance at musical events: music department concerts, master classes, approved community events. May be repeated.
      • MUS 203R & MUS 204 R--Music Theory I & II (3 credits each) - Counterpoint and harmony (written and keyboard). (Formerly MUS 207; implemented Fall 2004.)
      • MUS 341--Music History I (3 credits) - Survey of Western music: ancient Greece through early Beethoven. (Formerly MUS 201; implemented Fall 2004.)
      • OR
      • MUS 342--Music History II (3 credits) - Survey of Western Art Music from late Beethoven to the present. (Formerly MUS 202; implemented Fall 2004.)
    • Major ensembles (3 credits)
    • Instrumental or vocal instruction (3 credits)
    • Electives in music courses numbered 300 or above (5-6 credits) These electives may include upper-division credits earned in ensembles (MUSE) and/or instrumental/vocal instruction (MUSA).  Students must complete a minimum of 9 credits in courses numbered 300 or above.

Music Minor Requirements, Music Industry Interest

Music Minor Requirements 2010 - 2011

Students with majors in another field may minor in music with an emphasis on the Music Industry by completing the following:

  • Music Industry Subject
    • Core courses (18 credits)
      • MUS 100--Concert Attendance (satisfactory completion of three semesters) (0 credits) - Development of listening skills through attendance at musical events: music department concerts, master classes, approved community events. May be repeated.
      • MUS 109 R & MUS 110 R--Functional Piano I and II (1 credit each)
      • MUS 203 R & MUS 204 R--Music Theory I and II (3 credits each)
      • MUS 233 & MUS 234--Recording Techniques and Midi I and II (4 credits) - Electronic music, analog and digital. Includes techniques of electro-acoustical recording (tape and computer sequencing). (Formerly MUS 222; implemented Fall 2004.)
      • MUS 485--Internship (audio production or music management) (3 credits) - Application of course content included in MUS 381, 384 or 441 in the schools or community agencies under the supervision of school or agency personnel and university staff members. Maximum of 12 credits each.
      • MUS 341--Music History I (3 credits) - Survey of Western music: ancient Greece through early Beethoven. (Formerly MUS 201; implemented Fall 2004.)
      • OR
      • MUS 342--Music History II (3 credits) - Survey of Western Art Music from late Beethoven to the present. (Formerly MUS 202; implemented Fall 2004.)
    • Select two credits from the following: (2 credits)
      • MUSE 402--Symphonic Chorus - Presentation of large-scale choral works. Maximum of 6 credits each. (Formerly MUS 119/319; implemented Fall 2004.)
      • MUSE 412--Symphonic Band - Performance of representative literature for large bands. Maximum of 6 credits. (Formerly MUS 118/318; implemented Fall 2004.) (Prerequisites: Previous band experience and audition.)
      • MUSE 415--Marching Band - Marching techniques and performances; performance of concert literature (after marching season). Maximum of 6 credits each. (Formerly MUS 117/317; implemented Fall 2004.) (Prerequisite: Previous band experience.)
      • MUSE 421--Symphony Orchestra - One or more concerts of representative orchestra literature are given each semester. Maximum of 6 credits. (Formerly MUS 125/325; implemented Fall 2004.)
      • MUSE 431--Jazz Ensemble - Performing ensemble specializing in traditional and contemporary big band jazz literature. Maximum of 6 credits.
    • Elective in a music course numbered 300 or above (1 credit)
      TOTAL (21 credits)
